Principal Man...

I had lunch today with one of my best friends. We've worked together for a very long time and we basically share a brain. Many years ago (I can't remember how long ago) we were arguing about something and we decided that I was 'Principal Man' and my friend David was 'Compromise Boy.' I'd have costume in black and white while he'd have a multi-colored cape. I'd be confident and decisive while he would always try to help everyone get along.

During lunch today we exchanged gifts and he gave me an artists rendering of Principal Man and Compromise Boy in a wood frame. It's beautiful and I will keep it always. I can't wait to hang it in my office somewhere. Maybe some day I'll scan it and post it on the site. We'll see. If you happen to stop by, check it out - it's all about me.

Progress on the book

Well, I've been carving out time at night to work on the book. I've finished three chapters and I'm spending time tonight going back through them and giving them a thorough edit. Anna wants to read the chapters, but I don't want to give them to her before I'm sure they aren't crap.

I had a discussion last week with another publisher. We discussed the book and they asked for a proposal. I took a proposal I used for another publisher, reformatted it into the template the published provided and sent it off (the next morning of course, it's not too horrible to seem eager and organized). The publisher said "Got it. Will get back to you ASAP." so all I can do now is wait and continue writing.

My plan is to have through chapter 4 finished by the end of the year. We'll see how this goes.

Starting my second book

Well, I started working on my second book. This time I decided to use a publisher (due to the nature of the book) and I got a very favorable response from my publisher of choice. Unfortunately they rejected my book, they really didn't seem to understand the value of the book I was proposing, so now it's time to seek out other publishers. I can still publish it myself if I don't get a publisher, but it's really easier to have someone else marketing your book.

I'm going to start writing December 1st (unless I get some free time before then). I'll keep you informed on how it's progressing.

Snow, snow and more snow

The city of Akron picks up leaves twice a season and they weren't scheduled to come until the 24th. I was going to do it all on Saturday (the 15th), but I never got around to it. On Sunday morning (the 16th), at about 6:50 AM mind you, the city was out there picking up leaves with a huge vacuum.

I was pretty upset about them waking me up like that on a Sunday so I went out to check on why they were there doing something more than a week early. They told me they wanted to try to get ahead of the snow and boy I bet they were glad they did.

After the kids woke up and we all had breakfast, I headed out to mow and bag the leaves (so I could dump them in the front yard closer to the pick-up date). I really thought I was acting crazy when I did this and I'm sure Anna thought I was, but boy am I glad I did. As soon as I finished the last row of yard, it started snowing and we've had snow ever since. It snowed like crazy last night and it's snowing heavily right now - I don't know how they're going to be able to pick up leaves on Monday. It's going to be ugly and I'm sure my yard is going to be a mess when the snow clears.

Drums

I'm always playing the air drums when there's a great song on the radio - especially if it's a Rush song (Neal is the best damn drummer in the world after all). Well, a few years back, Bill gave me a complete set of drums for Christmas. It was an amazing gift, cool but fairly impractical. I love the drums, but can't read music and didn't think at my age I could ever get the time to learn to play.

I set them up in my basement but when Anna and I got ready to move, I lent them to a friend of mine (Davo) who was a drummer in high school. Davo had them for a while but finally brought them back this weekend. I initially started storing them in the laundry room but changed my mind and had him set them up in my office.

Well, the kids went nuts about the drums. They've been down here every day since then just sitting there banging on the drums. August has actually figured out a bit about how to play them and he's getting a rhythm down. He will sit you down and play a song for you - his favorite is the theme song for Clifford the Big Red Dog. He will hit a drum for every syllable in the song - thinking that's how it's done. Elizabeth's playing too and I hope they stick with this for a while, I like the fact that they want to do something musical (although a bit loud). If they're still interested in a year I would sign them up for some sort of lessons.

Play House

We were all at Sam's Club and we noticed this little play house. It was $299, made of Cedar and kinda cute. Anna and I both looked at it, then looked at it again then even put the kids up on the shelf so they could go inside and look around. Of course, they LOVED it, so we decided to get them one for their birthday.

I couldn't do the one at Sam's Club because it was really cheaply built and I knew it wouldn't last. So I asked Arnie to help me and one weekend we built a play house. You can find photos here. When we finished it, I noticed that I could put a piece of wood up on top of the frame and make a loft for the kids to play in, so that is what I did. The loft is probably their favorite part of it - they spend most of their time up there. I'm going to cut a hole in the front of the house so they can pop their heads out (nothing more) when they're in the loft.

BTW - Anna did all of the painting, I don't paint. Didn't she do a wonderful job?

Elizabeth ran away from home today...

Anna had the kids cleaning up the house before they could watch a little TV this afternoon. When they sat down to watch, August was playing with this noise maker he received for his Birthday. Well, Elizabeth didn't want him to play with that, so she kicked him - hit him in the mouth and gave him a fat lip.

Well, we put her in time out and let August watch TV and she went crazy. It was a special show she picked out and she really wanted to watch it. We told her (calmly) that since she kicked August, she would not be able to watch TV today. Well she went nuts and tried all sorts of tactics to get to watch TV and we wouldn't bend. She finally ended up threatening us with her leaving and even packed a bag. She went out to sleep in the play house (more on that later) and we gave her a blanket and turned off all the lights - it lasted much longer than we thought it would before she finally came in to stay.

I told her she could leave, but as soon as she left, she was on here own. As soon as she knew she couldn't come back in the morning, in she came.

Pictures

Anna's Mom and my Aunt Jane are shameless in their pressure for updated pictures. They both make it very clear when it's been a while since they've seen photos of the kids. What I've started doing is uploading the photos to Kodak Gallery then purchasing prints which I send directly to them. Aline's gotten three or four packets of photos since summer started and my Aunt Jane will be getting a huge pack in the next couple of days.

Hopefully they'll lighten up the pressure a little bit for at least a little while.

The New Job

Well, now that I've explained the whole Binary Tree thing, it's time to let you know that I did get a job and tell you a bit about it. I was able to get a job for a company called BoxTone; I've known them for a while and it seemed like a very good fit.

Working at BoxTone allows me to stay in the BlackBerry space; we produce Enterprise Software for BlackBerry Monitoring. It's our stuff that allows the large BlackBerry shops to keep a handle on their BlackBerry environments. I'm going to split my time between Sales Engineering (supporting sales) and Product Management. Long term goal is to be full time product manager for BoxTone's BlackBerry Application Monitoring capabilities.

More on the job later.
