Wild Weekend

Phew, wild weekend.

OK, so I got sick again- yuck. I was in Columbia, MD and tried to come home Thursday when I got really sick, but my boss (rightfully so) suggested I see how I felt Friday. Well, I felt HORRIBLE Friday and made beeline for home. It was a mess, I was sick all the way home but was able to get on the earliest flight home. Rushed to the house, climbed into bed and spent most of the next 18 hours there.  It was the worst I’d felt in years. I went to see my Doctor and turns out I had a 99.6 temperature.

Abby came to visit this weekend. She’s 15.5 and has her temporary license. Wow, she’s driving now, amazing. I made a point of letting her drive my car and Anna’s, she did really well.

We went to see the new Disney movie, ‘Up’ I think it’s called. Good, but once again, Disney made an adult movie for kids. Very good, but VERY ADULT and VERY SAD. August and Elizabeth really didn’t understand much of what was going on. Too bad for Disney/Pixar – they should get back to making movies for kids.

We had a house showing today, so Anna and I took the kids and dogs out to Sand Run Park for a long hike through the hills. Everyone loved it. We went out for ice cream afterwards and of course the kids loved that.

Need to wrap up the book. I thought I had about 3 weeks of work to finish the last chapters, but the major reviewer delivered their comments this morning and it’s a mess. They’re trying to completely rewrite the book. It’s going to take me 10 hours or more just to dig through all of their comments (more than 100 in some chapters) and use the good stuff and ignore the rest. Problem is I have 4 more to give them this week and 9 more chapters to wrap up and get into the editing/review process.  I have about 4 and a half chapters to finish and get into the process. I’m not going to make my deadline, but I won’t miss it by much. I do need to get this book done, I miss my family and I know they miss me.

Hamthrax

My boss mentioned the other day that he was referring to Swine Flu as Hamthrax.  Think about it…antrax, hamthrax.

Easiest Chapter Yet

Well, I had to whack a chapter from the book last night. I can’t say which one and I can’t say why, but it was one I was really looking forward to writing.  Since I no longer have to write it, it’s the easiest one I worked on (or didn’t work on I guess).

Here’s where the book stands:

  • I’ve put six chapters through the editing process.
  • I submitted three new chapters to the editor last night.
  • I have one chapter in the review process.

I just can’t seem to finish chapter 10. It’s about a third written, but the other two thirds cover some new tools that RIM has in beta and I can’t get one of them to work and I can’t download the other. What I’m going to do tonight, after all of my other work is finished of course, is start work on chapter 11 which should be about the hardest to write.

Chapter 11 is the first chapter on building Java applications for BlackBerry. It won’t be necessarily that hard to write, it’s just that it’s a VERY big topic and I will need to be very careful to be structured, organized and concise in my writing. The book isn’t supposed to be a book on Java, there’s another one coming out that covers that, but I want to make sure I’m thorough.  I’ll start the outline tonight and start plugging away on it. At my current pace/schedule, I’ll have 18 days to work on this chapter.  It should be doable although I think I’m coming down with something.

jwargo.com

I’m having a blast building jwargo.com. I spent some time last night playing with all of the possible options for Joomla. I’ve tuned and tweaked the site and even got a couple of posts up there.  I hope this is a fun and useful site to maintain.

jwargo.com goes live

A long time ago I registered jwargo.com because I thought I’d do a personal blog there. My original thoughts were to try to use some free Domino-based blog software that was available but I never got around to it. Now with my ISP (Fatcow – www.fatcow.com) offering so much free software I thought I would try making this work. When you get a chance, check out www.jwargo.com.

McNelly SoftWorks site

I decided to start doing some things with the McNelly SoftWorks web site.  I’m going to rework the whole site using Joombra, an open source content management system. I think I’m even going to kill FormBlaster as a product. I never sold many licenses and it’ silly to keep it up there.

I’m then going to rebuild the newsoccerref.com web site for my first book. I’m also going to start work on BlackBerry Development Fundamentals web site using the same tools. I’ll let you know when it’s all ready.

Busy day with the kids today

Anna had to do something this morning, so we played around the house for a while then went outside. Went to a First Holy Comunion party this afternoon and played outside before putting them to bed. They’re going to be some tired kids.
