8 Months, 2 Days

That’s how long it takes to ‘write’ a 500 page computer book. I started the process on December 1st, 2008 and it’s pretty much consumed my after-hours life since then. I have:

 • Written 17 chapters and 3 appendices
 • Captured screen shots or drawn figures for about 200 images for the book
 • Been through the editing process with the ‘Development Editor’
 • Been through the review process with about 6 reviewers plus a review committee for a major player who shall remain nameless
 • Sliced, diced and crammed as much information as I can in the book.

It turns out that it’s probably going to be too long. My publishing contract says 400 pages, I think I wrote about 600 pages and the editor has whacked it down to what I hope is about 500 pages (big, but not too big).

Now all I have to do is relax for a while. I’m still waiting for a couple of small reviews then the publisher will release the book to the production department and I get to start the spelling, grammar and punctuation portion of this process. I’m on schedule, so none of this should delay the book’s publish date (which is October 16th if you care).

Now I can go back to being a normal human for a few weeks as the production process starts. I wonder if my wife and kids remember me…

BlackBerry Development Fundamentals is available online

Safari Books Online published the first half of the book in rough-cuts format today. You can start reading the book here.

Reworking Chapter 11

No, not THAT chapter 11, chapter 11 of my book.

I submitted the remaining chapters for review and got an email from one of the reviewers indicating that she had some problems with the chapter and wanted to talk about it. We chatted for a while and I agreed with her. I’d written about what I knew about BlackBerry Java Development, but I didn’t present the information in as structured of a way as was needed for the book. I asked her to write-up her concerns and I’d rewrite the chapter with her comments in mind. Well, she gave me an outline to use to structure the content and it was spot on. I’ve studied her outline, adjusted it a little bit and now I’m using it as a guide for the rewrite. Ultimately this will make it a better book, but I’m truly not excited to be back in writing mode again.

The entire first half of the book has been through the edit and review process, so it should be up on Safari Books Online in a couple of weeks. Now all I need to do is finish 11 (and any corresponding changes that happen in the appendix) and get the content off for review.

It looks like I will actually be done with the book on schedule and, because I wrapped up the review into the editing process, I may actually see the book released early. I’ve been getting a lot of attention this week on the Internet. Berryreview.com wrote about the book and many of the other blogs picked it up. There were even some translations into Spanish that popped up a day later. I’ll try to post all of the links to www.bbdevfundamentals.com when I get a chance.

‘Finished’ the book last night…

Yep, it’s finished! Wow, a whole bunch of work that was. Now all I have to do is finish the review/edit phase and (woohoo!) it’s ready to publish.

So, here’s where it stands:

 • Chapters 1 through 9 have been through the edit and review process
 • Chapters 10 and 11 are in the review process
 • I still need to give 12 through 18 a read and submit them to the reviewers and editors

Making progress!

Book Update

Finished chapter 16 late last night. The chapter turned out pretty well, better than I expected. All I have left to do writing-wise is finish half of chapter 10. I should be able to complete that by Monday and the writing will be done.

As soon as the writing is done, the editing/review process begins. I’ve got the first half of the book in the review process, so all I need to do is get the last half in there. Monday begins giving each chapter a thorough read then send them off to the reviewers and the editor. Should take me a couple of weeks to get that going (there are 9 chapters to work on) and get this HUGE project wrapped up.

I now know why every computer book is dedicated to the wife of the author. Writing a technical book is a huge undertaking and Anna has had to do almost everything these last 8 months as I worked on this thing. Good thing she’s awesome.

Saturday Morning

Well, I’m all alone this weekend and I’m (supposed to be) working on the book. I started chapter 14 Thursday night and my goal is to finish it today. I’ve decided that if I do this again, I’m going to put each chapter into its own folder – much easier when managing image files (screen shots).

Spent the morning getting caught up in my office. The bills are paid, deposits made and dry cleaning picked-up. No more delays!

The book is available for pre-order on Amazon.com

I just discovered that BlackBerry Development Fundamentals was added to the Amazon catalog today. Yipee!! Here’s where you can get it:

Back to Writing

OK, I finally finished getting through the final reviewer’s comments. It was arduous – in one chapter, there were more comments than could fit on the page. As much as I hated putting aside the writing to spend an entire week processing a reviewer’s comments, their comments in general were helpful for the book. In many cases, they were looking too much at the book from their perspective (how they’d write it) but in others the comments were spot on and helped some of the rough spots in the book.

I really wish I had time to go back and do a complete edit/rewrite on the chapters, but I’m so far behind on writing that I’m not sure how much more ‘reading’ I’m going to be able to do.

My good friend David Via wrote an amazing forward for the book – Anna got all misty when she read it. It’s nice to have good friends to support you!

Wild Weekend

Phew, wild weekend.

OK, so I got sick again- yuck. I was in Columbia, MD and tried to come home Thursday when I got really sick, but my boss (rightfully so) suggested I see how I felt Friday. Well, I felt HORRIBLE Friday and made beeline for home. It was a mess, I was sick all the way home but was able to get on the earliest flight home. Rushed to the house, climbed into bed and spent most of the next 18 hours there. It was the worst I’d felt in years. I went to see my Doctor and turns out I had a 99.6 temperature.

Abby came to visit this weekend. She’s 15.5 and has her temporary license. Wow, she’s driving now, amazing. I made a point of letting her drive my car and Anna’s, she did really well.

We went to see the new Disney movie, ‘Up’ I think it’s called. Good, but once again, Disney made an adult movie for kids. Very good, but VERY ADULT and VERY SAD. August and Elizabeth really didn’t understand much of what was going on. Too bad for Disney/Pixar – they should get back to making movies for kids.

We had a house showing today, so Anna and I took the kids and dogs out to Sand Run Park for a long hike through the hills. Everyone loved it. We went out for ice cream afterwards and of course the kids loved that.

Need to wrap up the book. I thought I had about 3 weeks of work to finish the last chapters, but the major reviewer delivered their comments this morning and it’s a mess. They’re trying to completely rewrite the book. It’s going to take me 10 hours or more just to dig through all of their comments (more than 100 in some chapters) and use the good stuff and ignore the rest. Problem is I have 4 more to give them this week and 9 more chapters to wrap up and get into the editing/review process. I have about 4 and a half chapters to finish and get into the process. I’m not going to make my deadline, but I won’t miss it by much. I do need to get this book done, I miss my family and I know they miss me.

It’s Official

The publisher has decided on a title for the book! The book is going to be called BlackBerry Development Fundamentals (the working title was Fundamentals of BlackBerry Development, so this is close to what I was thinking would be a good title). The book should be up on amazon.com soon, look for the book by title or use the ISBN’s for the book: ISBN-10: 0321647424 or ISBN-13: 9780321647429.

I have 5 chapters in the editing process and hope to have the 6th in at the end of the weekend. I’m halfway through writing chapter 10, so I’m more than halfway done (10.5/16). I’m having fun, but I’ll be happy when I can stop working into the we hours of the night.
